The American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) is a national organization of more than 15,000 immigration attorneys and law professors. U.S. families seeking permanent residence for close family members, as well as U.S. corporations seeking talent from the global marketplace, are represented by AILA member attorneys. Foreign students, celebrities, athletes, and asylum seekers are all represented by AILA members on a pro gratis basis. AILA is a nonpartisan, not-for-profit organization with 39 chapters and over 50 national committees that provide continuing legal education, information, professional services, and expertise. Brief History
The Association of Immigration and Nationality Lawyers (AINL) was founded on October 14, 1946, in Manhattan, New York, by a group of 19 immigration lawyers and experts. [4] Twelve of the association’s founders had recently worked for the Immigration and Naturalization Service and saw an opportunity to use their professional status «to enhance the caliber and reputation of the practitioner appearing before the Immigration Service,» as they put it. Josh Koenigsberg was the association’s first president, alongside Vice President Gaspare Cusumano, Secretary Anita Streep, and Treasurer Daniel Caputi. The American Immigration Lawyers Association was renamed in 1982 as the association established a national headquarters in Washington, D.C. The association had grown to 1,800 members by 1985, a threefold increase from 1975. As of 2017, AILA has over 15,000 members scattered over 39 chapters in the US and around the world.
